Much of Ian’s work plays with perceptions. Often, there is a dialogue between photographs and actual objects, pictorial space and real space. Photographs are also rotated or inverted, resulting in different viewpoints. Other works feature trompe l’oeil effects or play with optical distortions. The intention with all these approaches is to engage the spectator in the process of looking. The work has been developed within the context of contemporary practice that critically engages with the photographic medium and the nature of the object. It has also grown out of an interest in all sorts of visual trickery, from spatial ambiguities to double images.

For many years, Ian worked in galleries and museums, devising and organising all kinds of exhibitions. More recently, he has concentrated on developing his own work. This has been featured in several notable exhibitions, including Nautical Perspectives, St Katherine Docks, London, Obstructions, Castlefield Gallery, Manchester and Home Ideal 2024, NGO DEI, The Hague. Ian has also developed projects as an independent curator, co-curating and exhibiting in shows such as In the Making, Salford Museum and Art Gallery. He is a member of CG Associates and was part of bOlder, a Castlefield Gallery/GMCA Visual Art Talent Programme.
